A review of a Project entering its 43rd year, that started with a group of local volunteers who agreed to work on the adjacent heathland which was moving towards becoming a woodland and did so over the period 1975 - 2003.
Loss of the Team Leader and inability of Colchester Borough Council to continue the support at the previous level led to a large step forward in management.
From 2004 to the present day the loose group became a Charity, sought funding for the management, became a partner with the County Wildlife Trust, and signed a joint Farm Business Rental with EWT and the Owner Peter Wilkin for 30 years.
Over this last period from 2004 just under £50,000 was raised by the Friends of Tiptree Heath, and received just over £154,000 in Grants, but still nature marches on.
Fri 23 rd March 7.30pm Astro Evening
Hopefully it will be clear and we will be able to view the Moon at 1st quarter through a telescope - this is an ideal phase to see details of mountains and craters. We will also have an opportunity to take images of the Moon and record star trails which reveal the colours (temperatures) of stars and the rotation of the Earth.
Also on the agenda will be viewing double stars through a telescope and watching Arcturus rise - the brightest star in the Northern sky and a familiar "Herald of Spring" - it becomes more readily seen in the evening sky as winter fades out and the days get longer.
Meet at the concrete hardstanding by the sharp bend in the Rivenhall/Silver End road (TL822187). Bring binoculars and torch. Wear appropriate outdoor clothing.
Weds 25thApril7:15pm Cowslip Count: Meet in the car park for Tarecroft Wood on Rickstones Road.
